Tips for Buying Children's Shoes

With the start of the new school year in our midst, many families with children are facing a familiar scene – taking the kids shopping for new shoes. While it’s necessary to consider that children are still growing, finding shoes that fit a child’s feet well is equally important. Parents should plan shoe shopping trips for later in the day because the feet tend to swell, or become slightly larger, as the day goes on. When kids are trying on shoes, parents should ensure that there’s space between the end of the shoe and the longest toe. Checking a shoe’s width is also important and will help ensure that toes are not crammed along the side of the shoe. A shoe’s depth is another thing to consider; make sure the child’s feet are not bulging and fit comfortably within the shoe. After checking the width, length, and depth, parents should have their children walk around in the shoes and observe how they walk with the shoes on. If you have any questions about shoes for your children, consult with your podiatrist.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
